Possibility
When my heart lead me from banking to my roots on the farm, a colleague and friend gave me a beautiful card bearing a quote from the Emily Dickinson poem “I dwell in Possibility”. I framed that card and keep it on my night table at our house in the city. It reminds me of the reason for my choice. The transformation from farm girl, to urban professional, to traveler between those two worlds uncovers new possibilities every day.
Growing up on the farm in Illinois, we worked hard and gave gratitude for God’s blessings. We appreciated simple elegance and small luxuries. And we often found them all around us — in the land, the plants, the animals, and in the homes and gardens we built in the midst of it all.
Living most days in the corporate world, the farm was the sanctuary where I came to reflect. It renewed me, gave me energy to embrace all that was ahead, encouraged me to be the person I am called to be. Even, and especially, I suppose, when I had no idea what those were! Special nuggets of inspiration and beauty got packed up — sometimes quite literally, to spark my spirit to lead with courage and to move forward with grace and gratitude.
Now, back and forth between farm and city, the other side of that same poem comes to mind:

The prairies of the Midwest are to me both occupation and paradise. The possibility, I believe, is to share the inspiration they offer. I hope they brighten your own life’s journey and personal transformation.
